#gif warning #avengers #okay but why does nOBODY EVER TALK ABOUT THE GENERATION GAP #come on guys this is the MOST INTERESTING THING #look if steve had lived through the war he would have been part of that post-wwii generation #imagine steve in the 60S GUYS #you think he would have put up with those young folks disrespecting those soldiers and his country by protesting the war? HECK NO #remember that scene at the beginning of ca:tfa where he tells off that guy in the movie theater? THAT WOULD BE STEVE IN THE 60S #and tony is in his 40s!! tony is gen x! tony is NOT EVEN A BOOMER #tony is TOO YOUNG TO BE A BABY BOOMER tony is YOUNGER THAN OUR PARENTS #tony doesn’t know what it’s like to live in a country that’s in total war! tony doesn’t know what it’s like for loyalty to your country t… #to be something that almost everyone has! #look guys we make fun of america ALL THE TIME we mock patriotism and nationalism and the usa CON STANT LY #when steve hears the word soldier he equates it with the word hero #and when tony hears the word soldier he hears an insult. #because steve’s war is wwii #and tony’s wars are vietnam and iraq and afghanistan and tony knows that when america fights wars it is not necessarily the good guy! #and steve cannot even BEGIN to comprehend that #steve barely knows what WATERGATE is for god’s sake steve probably still trusts the government #steve doesn’t know about jfk conspiracy theories! steve doesn’t know about the patriot act #(and let me remind you that in 616 canon steve actually fought a war to bring down the expy!patriot act) #god america has grown up SO MUCH since steve’s day #americans are sarcastic and cynical and plugged into the media 24/7 #americans depricate themselves constantly americans hate america more than anybody else does #pearl harbor turned america into a unified force for change in the world; 9/11 turned america into something paranoid and bitter #steve no longer represents america #he represents what america wishes it had ever been #and tony? tony understands the usa a whole lot better than steve does and he knows it and steve never will #and tony understands how war can destroy and steve only understands how it can save

always reblog for those tags

#midnight is a tERRIFYING EPISODE okay

We still dont even know what the THING WAS

I was simultaneously laughing and crying through this entire scene.

there is no monster in all of doctor who that terrified me as much as this one. I mean yeah there have been terrible, terrible creatures, but the doctor always managed to defeat them. He didn’t manage to defeat this one. It’s still out there, on the diamond planet and it would’ve killed him and taken over the whole universe if it wasn’t for that stewardess. Because if a creature like that can live on the diamond planet - a planet where everyone thought nothing can survive, what can it do to the rest of the world?

I bet it’s out there right now, having tea with the vasta nerada, Silence, and angels.

The thing that terrified me about this episode wasn’t the creature, or demon, or whatever it was.  It was the humans.  And their fear.  They were ready to kill something because it was new.  They were ready to kill the Doctor because of his intelligence and curiosity.  That’s the thing about humans- we’re not bad, we’re just so scared of the unknown that, in situations like this, we’ll forget our morals and our minds and we will do anything- anything- to return things to normal.

This was one of less than ten episodes of DW I’ve ever seen, and if the rest of the show is anything like this, fuck Supernatural, it’s the scariest shit I’ve ever seen. Colin Morgan aside, at least SPN monsters are just that, supernatural- they’re not real, they can’t harm us (cannibalistic hillbillies etc aside, I mean in general). It’s like Voldemort vs Umbridge- the greater, distant horror will never be as frightening to you as the one you experience on a day to day basis.

This episode pissed me off so much because the humans are such hypocrites in the end and they didn’t even say anything close to a sorry or thank you to the doctor.

It also reminded me that it’s true. There are many humans out there that would do the exact same thing as them to a foreign intelligent, maybe even worse

Found! First Earth-Size Planet That Could Potentially Support Life
Astronomers have discovered a planet about the size of Earth,
orbiting its star in the zone where oceans of liquid water would be possible.

From Space.com

A study of the newly-found planet indicates it could have an Earth-like atmosphere and water at its surface. The planet Kepler-186f is the fifth planet of the star Kepler-186, 490 light-years away.

The planet has 1.11 times the Earth’s mass. Its radius is 1.1 times that of Earth. Kepler-186f orbits at 32.5 million miles (52.4 million kilometers) from its parent star. Its year is 130 Earth days.

The planet orbits Kepler-186, an M-type dwarf star less than half as massive as the sun. Because the star is cooler than the sun, the planet receives solar energy less intense than that received by Mars in our solar system, despite the fact that Kepler-186f orbits much closer to its star.

guys this isn’t just some science jerk-offery. This is legitimately the first confirmed exoplanet that fulfils all of NASA’s main prerequisites, same mass, same density, rocky, right zone in terms of heat, it may even have an atmosphere.

Soon we’re launching a satellite code named “Star Shade”, which although it sounds badass is literal- it’s a massive unfurling shade that will allow a powerful telescope to TAKE PHOTOS of these goddamn planets, no doubt this one will be first on the list, to see what they look like.

PHOTOS, EVERYBODY. PHOTOS.

I say we name it in honour of Carl Sagan who first brought serious investigation into finding exoplanets in a time where people didn’t even believe they existed, yet.

portalgifs:

Probably my favorite part of the ending to portal 2 was this shot right here. For the entirety of Portal and Portal 2 you were always confined within the blank chambers of Aperture Science, even at the beginning the second game, when you walked through the ruins of Aperture Science, taken over by plant life, it was obvious that you were still trapped. The entire time through both games you were also never alone, you were certainly supposed to feel isolated, but you were never by yourself. If it wasn’t the voice of GLaDOS dictating your decisions, it was Wheatley, even at the beginning of the game when you first woke up the voice of the system AI provided continuous information whenever Wheatley wasn’t around to fill the silence.
Then suddenly after the Elevator ride the door opens and you see an open field. For the first time in either games you are completely out of the confines of Aperture Science. Valve gave Chell; a protagonist who does not speak once for the entirety of either game, an amazing ability to make you understand what she is motivated by. The entire time your actions are intended to defy and escape Aperture, and a final shot of her being alone in a field is possibly the best payoff I could have asked for from a sequel because, for the first time, Chell has direct control over her life.
